Trade and customs relations between Serbia and China

Serbia's customs regime rests on the Law on Foreign Trade Operations, the Customs Law and the Customs Tariff Law (trade.gov, Import Tariffs, accessed September 27, 2026). Outside that coverage, a duty specific to the tariff heading is added first, and VAT then applies to the total: no average rate per product was found, so check line by line.

Required documents and customs clearance steps
An import shipment requires a commercial invoice, a packing list and a transport document, plus the nomenclature code for each item. For preferential duty treatment, a certificate of origin meeting the China agreement's rules must accompany the shipment.

Serbia aligns a large share of its technical standards with European standards, though no confirmed up-to-date percentage is available: check with the Institute for Standardization of Serbia before committing to a specific standard. Ports, shipping routes from southern China, and recommended Incoterms
Serbia is landlocked, with no sea coast: a container from Guangzhou, Shenzhen or Yantian transits through a regional port before reaching the country by road, rail or river on the Danube. The ports most often cited are Koper, Rijeka, Thessaloniki, Constanta and Bar, the latter linked to Belgrade by a rail connection still being modernized (Wikipedia, Port of Bar article, accessed September 27, 2026). No verifiable transit time from southern China was found: ask your freight forwarder.
For air freight, Belgrade's Nikola Tesla Airport remains the natural entry point. Payment, currency, and the step-by-step process for a first order
The common practice among Chinese suppliers is a deposit at order confirmation followed by a balance before shipment, paid into the supplier's business account, never a personal account. A change of bank details received by email should be verified by phone before any transfer: this type of fraud remains common in sourcing. The Serbian dinar floats against the dollar and the euro: a contract in dollars or yuan deserves close tracking of the exchange rate between order and final payment.
A first order follows a set sequence: written specifications, verified supplier, approved sample, proforma invoice with the chosen Incoterm, checked eligibility for duty elimination, certificate of origin if applicable, production follow-up, pre-shipment quality control, freight to the regional port and onward to Serbia, and customs clearance by the importer or their representative.
