Importing From China to Bahrain: Customs and VAT in 2026

Importing from China to Bahrain means dealing with a small market tied to a common customs tariff shared with the other five Gulf countries, and driven by infrastructure projects that fuel demand for materials and equipment. Drawing on cited sources, this article gathers the rates, documents and steps that matter for an importer based in Bahrain, as of September 27, 2026.

What Bahrain imports from China: promising niches

Bahrain is diversifying its economy away from hydrocarbons: real gross domestic product grew 2.6% in 2024, driven by a non-oil sector up 3.8% (trade.gov, accessed September 27, 2026). Several projects are opening import niches: the Bahrain Metro, announced in 2021 at a cost of 2 billion dollars, the King Hamad Causeway to Saudi Arabia at 4 billion dollars, and the expansion of the international airport, whose passenger capacity rose from 8 to 14 million as of January 2021.

Digital technology and healthcare round out the picture: Beyon Digital City, announced in November 2024, and Bahrain FinTech Bay, active since 2018, are driving demand for IT equipment; ongoing hospital projects are driving demand for medical equipment (trade.gov, accessed September 27, 2026). We found no official breakdown of Bahraini imports by country of origin: these figures describe demand drivers, not China's exact share.

  • Construction materials, driven by the Metro and the King Hamad Causeway
  • IT equipment, driven by Beyon Digital City and the fintech hub
  • Medical equipment, driven by ongoing hospital projects
  • Air freight, driven by the international airport expansion

Trade and customs relations between Bahrain and China

Bahrain has been a GATT member since December 13, 1993, and a WTO member since January 1, 1995 (wto.org, accessed September 27, 2026). The country belongs to the Gulf Cooperation Council, whose unified customs tariff, in force since January 2017, applies identically across the six member states to any Chinese goods (trade.gov, accessed September 27, 2026).

Bahrain implemented the first free trade agreement between the United States and a Gulf country in August 2006, maintains agreements with the European Free Trade Association and Singapore, and enters duty free into seventeen Arab states under the Greater Arab Free Trade Area. No bilateral agreement with China was identified in our sources (trade.gov, published May 8, 2024, accessed September 27, 2026): every Chinese shipment remains subject to the Gulf's standard tariff, administered by the Bahrain Customs Affairs Directorate under the Ministry of Interior.

Customs duties and import VAT: rates and calculation

The Gulf's common external tariff applies a 5% duty on the customs value, cost, insurance and freight included, on most goods from outside the Gulf, since January 2017 (trade.gov, accessed September 27, 2026). Cigarettes carry 200% and alcoholic beverages 225%, rates to reconfirm before importing these categories, as of September 27, 2026 (PwC Tax Summaries, current as of July 26, 2026). Four hundred twenty-six tariff lines, food and medical, enter duty free between Gulf countries, a regime that does not apply to Chinese goods.

VAT is added on top of duties. Raised to 10% in 2022 after starting at 5% when introduced, it has stayed at that level since (Bahrain's National Bureau for Taxation, via tradingeconomics.com, accessed September 27, 2026). Registration is mandatory above 37,500 Bahraini dinars of annual taxable turnover, voluntary from 18,750 dinars (PwC Tax Summaries, accessed September 27, 2026). Example on a customs value of 10,000 dinars, excluding tobacco and alcohol: duty at 5%, 500 dinars; VAT base of 10,500 dinars; VAT at 10%, 1,050 dinars; total taxes of 1,550 dinars, for a landed cost of 11,550 dinars excluding port fees.

Mandatory documents for customs clearance

Every import starts with a customs declaration, the customs bill of entry, which the importer or their agent must complete before clearance. Using a licensed customs broker is recommended, and importers can register on the official trade portal for the ports and airport (trade.gov, accessed September 27, 2026). The commercial invoice must state the exact value and true origin of the goods, a point checked by customs.

Depending on the product, extra documents apply: meat and poultry need a health certificate from the country of origin and a halal certificate from an approved Islamic center; a pharmaceutical product may only enter with the authorizations described below (trade.gov, accessed September 27, 2026). Our sources do not detail a systematic certificate of origin requirement: confirm this with your freight forwarder.

  • Customs declaration, customs bill of entry, before clearance
  • Commercial invoice stating exact value and origin
  • Health certificate and halal certificate for meat and poultry
  • Specific authorizations for pharmaceutical products

Standards, certifications and pre-shipment inspections

Bahrain is represented within the Gulf Standardization Organization, GSO, by its Ministry of Industry, Commerce and Tourism, the national standards body. Established in December 2001 and operational since May 2004, the GSO is headquartered in Riyadh and has seven members, including Bahrain (gso.org.sa, accessed September 27, 2026). It administers the G-Mark, issued through notified bodies across the Gulf for categories covered by common technical regulations.

We found no fee schedule or timeline specific to the G-Mark in Bahrain: confirm this with the ministry before production. No mandatory pre-shipment inspection by a Bahraini authority was identified: a private pre-loading inspection remains the best protection against a non-compliant shipment. For pharmaceuticals, imports are limited to medicines from manufacturers with a research department, already approved in at least two Gulf countries including Saudi Arabia, under joint approval from the Ministries of Industry and Health (trade.gov, accessed September 27, 2026).

Prohibited products or products requiring a license

Bahraini customs regulations ban a list of goods regardless of origin. Checking that a product is not on this list before production avoids a hold-up on arrival (trade.gov, accessed September 27, 2026).

  • Narcotics of any kind, used or retreaded tires, cultured pearls
  • Cigarette advertising material, radio-controlled miniature aircraft
  • Toy weapons capable of firing a projectile
  • Publications and items contrary to Islamic teachings
  • Asbestos, ivory, rhinoceros horn, live pigs

Ports, routes from southern China and recommended incoterms

Khalifa Bin Salman Port, in Hidd, is Bahrain's deep-water port for containerized freight. Its operator, APM Terminals Bahrain, describes it as a multi-purpose facility for domestic cargo and as a regional Gulf transshipment hub, with COSCO among its regular-line partners (apmterminals.com, accessed September 27, 2026). No verifiable transit time from southern China was found: ask your freight forwarder.

Bahrain International Airport saw its capacity rise from 8 to 14 million passengers per year as of January 2021 (trade.gov, accessed September 27, 2026); air freight there remains reserved for urgent or lightweight shipments. FOB from southern China works well if the buyer arranges transport; CIF or CFR if an intermediary handles it up to the Bahraini port. DDP is not advisable as long as the seller is not a registered customs declarant in Bahrain.

Payment, order steps and what Sorva does for you

On payment, common practice remains a deposit on order followed by a balance before shipment, paid exclusively into the Chinese company's business account, never a personal account: any change of bank details received by email should be verified with a direct phone call, since this type of fraud remains common in sourcing. The Bahraini dinar stays pegged to the dollar, at around 0.376 dinar per dollar under the rate published by the Central Bank of Bahrain (cbb.gov.bh, accessed September 27, 2026), which simplifies budgeting for an order invoiced in dollars.

An order follows a precise sequence: specifications, factory verification, approved sample, proforma invoice with incoterm, verification of G-Mark status or pharmaceutical authorizations, production follow-up, pre-loading inspection, documents for the customs broker, freight to Khalifa Bin Salman Port or the airport, then customs clearance by the client or their local agent.

Sorva is a sourcing and trading house based in Guangzhou, in the Tianhe district, backed by a Chinese subsidiary whose corporate purpose covers the purchase, resale and export of goods, and by a parent company in France. Our Chinese-speaking team finds and verifies factories, arranges visits and samples, negotiates, has quality checked before loading, and arranges freight to the chosen Bahraini port or airport, gathering the documents useful for your file. We never act as the official importer in Bahrain, do not clear customs locally, and do not export vehicles without a licensed Chinese exporter. Our base offer is invoiced in dollars, supplemented by zone-specific options quoted on request.

Wat u moet onthouden

Remember that in Bahrain, the standard customs duty caps at 5% and comes on top of a 10% VAT, but a product regulated by the Gulf also needs the G-Mark before arrival. First step: check with the Ministry of Industry, Commerce and Tourism whether your product falls under a Gulf technical regulation, before production.
