Red Sea: Houthis take control of the Yemeni coastline, carriers remain cautious

On the weekend of 11 to 12 September 2026, Houthi forces took the port of Mokha and the strategic island of Mayyun, completing their control of the Yemeni coastline on the Red Sea, close to the Bab al-Mandeb strait, through which around 12% of world shipping trade passes. Several major carriers had, however, started since mid-September to route some lines back through the Suez Canal.

On the weekend of 11 to 12 September 2026, Houthi forces seized the port city of Mokha and the island of Mayyun (Perim), completing their control of the Yemeni coastline on the Red Sea. According to the International Organization for Migration, more than 2,000 Yemenis fled to Djibouti within twenty-four hours. The Bab al-Mandeb strait, which this coastline overlooks, carries around 12% of world trade, including 11% of oil transported by sea and 8% of liquefied natural gas.

This takeover comes as Houthi attacks on commercial traffic, resumed in July 2026 after a quieter period, have intensified: a major Saudi oil pipeline linking the east and west of the kingdom was targeted in September 2026, further disrupting the flow of Gulf oil to world markets.

At the same time, since mid-September 2026, several major carriers, including Maersk, Hapag-Lloyd, MSC, CMA CGM and COSCO, have started routing some sailings back through the Suez Canal, while others, including Evergreen, ONE, HMM and Yang Ming, continue to go around Africa via the Cape of Good Hope. The two trends, a cautious return to Suez and the Houthi advance on the ground, coexist without either clearly prevailing.

The Suez Canal has also raised its transit surcharges since 15 July 2026 for most vessel categories, including 12% for container ships, as the canal authority seeks to rebuild its revenue despite still-reduced traffic.

Bir ithalatçı için bunun anlamı

For an importer, the route chosen by their carrier directly changes the lead time, by ten to fourteen days depending on whether the vessel goes via Suez or around Africa, as well as the surcharges applied on the freight invoice. Sorva tracks, with its partner freight forwarders, the route actually used on each booking, and recommends suitable war-risk cover before confirming a delivery date.
